Shaquille O’Neill, the iconic seven-foot giant who won basketball championships in Los Angeles and Miami, when he dominated at center, during his career in the NBA. His list of achievements both on and off the basketball court is enormous. Shaq has been involved in television, business and investing, and his huge fortune seems to be in good and large hands.
The brand of Shaquille O’Neal is powerful like the star, and he has been perceived positively by his public as a superman, a gentle giant, a man who is not self-centered like many in the sports world, a person who effortlessly makes light of himself and a man who is a humanitarian. Shaq has a strong presence in Orlando and after the economic crash of 2008 sought to help homeowners who were losing their homes in foreclosure.
Shaq is involved with his hometown of Newark and has joined forces with a developer, Wasseem Boraie, in a planned development, The Beach at South Inlet. In an interview with Philadelphia Property the author, Dan McQuade, explained the ramifications of the proposed development. The plan calls for a $61 million apartment complex to be built in the beleaguered Atlantic City area. The proposed construction site is adjacent to the recently closed Revel Casino, and the plan may be to house the staff of the casino when reopened; giving affordable housing, convenient to the casinos. Shaq does seem to have a heart as large as his 325-pound frame for the common man both here and in Orlando.
Boraie says he has additional funding that has been made available, and he is only waiting for the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) to give their okay to the plan.
The ball is now in the court of the CRDA. This area is in serious need of help. Casinos here have lost business to casinos in Delaware, New York, and Pennsylvania. There is also the adverse effect caused by Internet casinos. The choice for the CRDA is a difficult one and time is running out; it’s the fourth quarter and playing with Shaq on your team is much better than playing against the gentle giant.
